The Great Sheep Shenanigans by Peter Bently and Mei Matsuoka is a laugh-out-loud read that will be perfect for story time or sharing with your little ones. It is the story of Lou Pine the wolf that is out to get a tasty sheep for his supper - but it is NOT as easy as he thinks! The rhyming storyline is catchy and fun and the illustrations are SUPERB!! I love sharing this book out loud - it is a great read!

The Priest and the Peaches

When you read a realistic book that is not all happy and wonderful - it isn't always the easiest to read - BUT it is one of my favorite types of books. I don't need everything to be rosy - realistic is ok too. The Priest and the Peaches by Larry Peterson is one of those books - in fact, it started out SO rough that I wondered if it could be too far fetched - five children left to rear themselves as they've lost a mother, grandmother, AND father. But Peterson does a nice job of weaving humor into this story and the kids truly make their own fun - in spite of their circumstances. This historical fiction tale is set in the Bronx in the mid-1960's and is strong with interesting tidbits set in this time period. I was drawn to the character of Father Tim Sullivan who takes the children under his wing and loves on them with the love much like that of their Heavenly Father. The family theme is powerful and the characters are strong - at some points in the story, I felt it dragging a bit, but for the most part - I was drawn to finish the story and see how the kids worked to succeed in spite of their situation, neighbors, lack of parents, etc. Larry Peterson shows his creative abilities by writing a heartwarming picture book, Slippery Willie's Stupid, Ugly Shoes, previous to this and now, a novel that makes it worth turning every page.

The King Who Wouldn't Sleep

The King Who Wouldn't Sleep by Debbie Singleton and Holly Swain is a great story about a royal family with a problem - the king won't sleep - EVER! So when the princes come to woo his daughter, they can't ever speak to her since the king won't go to sleep. It isn't until he meets up with a plain young farmer that a plan is put into place to give the young farmer a chance! What a fun story and illustrations that just add to the fun feel of the story.

Elmer and Super El

I know I have told you that I do LOVE Elmer - so David McKee scores big with me with his latest Elmer book - Elmer and Super El. All of our little super hero fans will LOVE this wonderful children's book about Elmer helping his little super hero friend. What a great read - the illustrations are so colorful and fun - they just add to the whimsicalness of this fun jungle story.

Tony Ross' A Little Princess Stories are a big hit in our house. His latest, I Want to Win! is no exception. The main character in these stories is a little girl that is about the farthest idea of a princess that one would imagine - she isn't fancy by any means but she does ALWAYS wear her crown! In this story the Little Princess really wants to win - AT EVERYTHING. It is a great lesson to us all - we can't always win and how will we handle it when we don't win? I love the ending and it does encourage each of us to try our hardest!!

Simply Marvelous!! Gervase Phinn and Tony Ross have teamed up to write and illustrate a simply wonderful children's book - Who Am I? What a wonderful tale - a little chameleon is out to figure out what kind of animal he is. He bumps into many other animals who share with him why they are each special and then he meets up with Mr. Crocodile who tries to lure him into being a tasty meal. You will LOVE who finally saves the little chameleon AND then teaches him how special he is! What a great read for you to share with the little ones in your life!

Four Letter Words

A "needed" book?? Yep, this is it! I have three teenage boys that I am trying to prepare for the big world - and what do we discuss with them the most?? How to stand firm in what we believe and how to share that with others. So I feel that Bill Giovannetti has hit the nail on the head with his book, Four Letter Words. We need to know WHAT we believe, WHY we believe it and WHAT to say when it seems there are no ways to put it into words - Giovannetti does just that. As a pastor and professor - he's been through the trenches and knows how to put our faith into words that others will relate to. This is relevant for everyone, but especially so with our teens and those heading into college - as this is when we get challenged and asked so many of these tough questions.

Unhallowed Ground

Mel Starr is the author of Unhallowed Ground - the fourth book in the Hugh de Singleton, surgeon, series. I had not read any of this series until this one. I was pleasantly surprised - this is a mystery that will keep you guessing - at one point I really thought I had it figured out - I was ALL WRONG! (And yes, I do love that!!) These books are definitely stand-alones - but now that I've read one - I will be on the hunt to find more - Starr is an author that wraps you right up in the time period and culture with his wit and dry humor, there is never a dull moment to be sure! Although it is not super fast-paced as some mysteries are, it is a read that still draws you in and keeps you focused. It is set in the medieval time period so the history is rich and the story is strong! Come along with Master Hugh, a 14th century English surgeon, as he unravels the murder set in Bampton - and be surprised at the ending!!

After my second Sarah Jio book, I am convinced she's onto something! I have enjoyed both of her novels - they are short, easy to read, and yet both seemed to pull me right in and left me sad to see them end. They may not be long reads, but her character development is strong - and you really feel for the characters. The Bungalow, her second novel, is a touching storyline set on the Pacific Islands during World War Two. Anne Calloway, an Army Nurse, is sent to Bora Bora on her first assignment as a nurse. The story is gripping as she and her best friend, Kitty, find a whole new world on the island - one with war, violence, and new love. I think what I love most about Jio's books is that they are not predictable - AND I am a sucker for books that do not end "happily". I know, it sounds horrible to say that, but I enjoy a book that isn't always rosy. I cried through two chapters as I finished this one up - and it takes a lot for me to cry- but I was so disappointed at how it all was coming to a close - I wanted happy and yet resonated more with the heartfelt words of "real life" - it isn't always happy and perfect. It's a fast read - but a great story!

They get it - they live lives, they mother, they work, they just get it. And as a busy mom, I just need short nuggets to chew on throughout the day. That is what this devotional book consists of - nuggets of truth that are easy-to-digest and yet challenge you to be the best mom, wife, follower of Christ you can be. I don't know about you, but I need that - and I take it so much better coming from other women that understand. The Sound of Red Returning

I am thinking it is the month for historical fiction over here! This is my second or third historical fiction title and I am just loving this!! The Sound of Red Returning by Sue Duffy is another great novel full of history. This one particularly drew me in with the music-theme - it is so well-written one can almost hear the sounds of piano as you read! Liesl Bower is the main character in this story and she is a famous pianist that is running from the Russian and American CIA agents. Liesl changes throughout the novel, and as the reader, you can appreciate those life challenges and struggles that grow you and make you who you are, as she encounters them. The story is fast-paced and full of action. All of the musical themes are wonderful and for those of you that enjoy a little love story - yep, there's that as well! Duffy's first novel in this series is page-turner!

A Darkly Hidden Truth

I was not familiar with Donna Fletcher Crow as an author - but after just finishing A Darkly Hidden Truth, I am going to find book one in this series! This is book 2 of the Monastery Murders Series and this is really a well-written series. I love the way she ties church history in with a murder mystery - I mean REALLY, not too many people can boast that!! It is a wonderfully tangled mystery - I love it when, still halfway through the book, I have no idea what is going to happen. This is not a book that you read and can guess the ending - Crow takes you for twists and turns. GREAT read!!

Chasing Mona Lisa

Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey have teamed up and written a historical novel that exposes a side of history I knew nothing about. Chasing Mona Lisa is a fascinating story set in Paris in 1944 - the soldiers of the Third Reich are coming into Paris and totally ransacking the county - which includes stealing artwork by the great masters like Leonardo da Vinci and even the famous Mona Lisa. This is an action-packed story - with tons of history and a little romance thrown in to keep it "light". It was a fun read and a new-to-me part of history!

No Two Alike

This is a sweet children's book - Keith Baker is always wonderful but THIS one has a special place in my library since it's all about WINTER!!! In No Two Alike, Baker compares animals and nature items found in winter and then shares how they may look VERY much alike - but if you look closely, you can see how they are not! I thought this was a great book - the illustrations are wonderful and capture the winter-feel. And the ending is a pleaser as well - my girls loved it!

Chronicle Books sent me a copy of their book, Cake Simple, by Christie Matheson. This is a great cookbook! It is full of recipes for bundt-style cakes - and I do mean FULL of recipes! It is broken up into Bundt Classics, Bundt Decadence, Bundt Cakes for Food Snobs, and Mini Bundts. I never claimed to be an excellent cook but I do enjoy baking - here are the ones I want to try first:

Salted Caramel
Nutella

The Bird Sisters

I hope I don't say this too many times - but I really LOVED this book!! I think I have mentioned before, once or twice, on this blog that I LOVE birds. So how excited I was when I found yet another book that had a theme of birds! But this book has SO much more going for it than just the bird theme. The Bird Sisters by Rebecca Rasmussen is one of the best books I've read in awhile! Milly and Twiss are twin sisters that have stuck together from birth - and I do mean that. They have been there for each other and even grow old together. I love their relationship and it only helps to strengthen them for all they've been through. The girls do not lead a simple, easy life. They struggle through many issues with their family - their father AND their mother, and their cousin, Bett, who comes to stay with them for a summer - a summer that will truly leave them forever changed.

The characters are well-developed - the story is one that draws you in and keeps you there. Although it is a series of flashbacks and current life - it is not hard to follow. I really can not say enough how much this book captured me - I am anxiously waiting for a new novel from Rasmussen. IF you read it - please come back and comment - I'll be curious to hear your thoughts!

ABC 123 Fun

Here is an app that our Jada just LOVES right now! She is SO into her ABC's and numbers that this one is perfect for her. ABC 123 Fun is simple and yet perfect for your young learners. You can work on letters or numbers. Each screen has a letter or number, it says the name for you and then provides a picture, sometimes a sound to go along with the picture, and gives you the option to draw them. The drawing part is simple for even the youngest child as it guides you line by line on your writing - not letting you continue unless you get the lines correct. I like this app - it's colorful, simple and yet one that our daughter is just loving. My only complaint?? I wish it would count for you in the numbers section when you click on each item. But otherwise - fun and educational!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

There are books that get a lot of hype and then I just have to read them just to see if the hype is really worth it. So I read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. As I'm sitting here deciding what to say - I am still torn on this one. First of all - it took me FOREVER to get into - it seemed so disjointed to begin with that I had a hard time staying with it - in fact, I contemplated quitting a few times. Then, I got going and figured I at least should finish - so it was about at this point that I decided I might actually be intrigued by the storyline and then it was almost over. I guess I would say it just never really grabbed me. It is a story based around vintage photos the author came across - but even that was hard for me - sometimes it felt like the author had to make up characters and events just to fit his photos - and it felt a bit stilted to me.

There are intriguing parts for sure though - time travel, the idea of the loops that take you back in time - that was fascinating in the book. Even the children and their peculiarities were interesting but certainly never believable - the story just never "caught hold" for me. I know there are some that just love it - but it never really made me want to keep reading enough to shut all else out (and that's the sign of a good read in my book!!). The characters and relationships aren't as strong as I would have liked either - although you come to like some of the characters, you never really get to "know" them.

There are many interesting reviews on Goodreads - certainly check them out as well.
And the book trailer does do a good job of giving you a feel for the book - it is peculiar - that word fits it well - strange, peculiar, odd.

If you did read it and LOVE it - I'd love to hear your thoughts though - I'm hoping I didn't miss something while I was reading!!

Oh, and one more tidbit - I would NOT recommend this for Young Adult, as it was intended - the language can be quite foul and the innuendos are not something I would want my teens reading....only wanted to warn those that might suggest it to their teens - just know that that content is frequent throughout the book.

Preschool Cake Shop

Here's an app for your younger crew! Preschool Cake Shop is really a great app. It covers colors, puzzles, big/small, matching, letters, shapes, counting and more. It is simple to use, intuitive, and gives them time to make choices - I always like that. It is an iPhone app but plays nicely on the iPad as well. The characters are fun and it is colorful and appealing. My youngest really likes this app and I can see it being quite fun for the younger ages!

John Maxwell is the go-to on leadership - and his latest book, The 360 Degree Leader was another thought-provoking, challenging read. This book is not just for those in leadership positions - it is for anyone in a company - at any level and show you how your role can be leadership - no matter where you are. It encourages you in how to support your leader and by doing so, increase your own leadership level. I was deeply challenged with this book - there is room for leadership on many levels and that is what makes our companies strong - I am planning to share this one around - everyone will see a place for themselves and those are the kinds of work places we want to build!

Princess Stories

I had a hard time reviewing this book - it made it's way into our home and then was never to be seen BY ME again. Yep, it was hiding in Chloe's bed!! She quickly confiscated it and it has been missing ever since. But there is a reason for that - it's an adorable book for little girls!! Princess Stories by Carolyn Larsen is a book full of stories of Princesses from the Bible. God's Princesses - Eve, Sarah, Hagar, Moses' Mom, Rahab, Naomi, Abigail, The Shunammite Woman and many more!! The Princesses are listed with their scripture reference, a re-telling of their story, and them some points to ponder as you finish up the stories. I LOVED this and we NEED more of this - these aren't princesses that are all about their looks and their riches - these are princesses that are focused on what God has for them and how He makes them into princesses. What great examples for my daughters - fabulous!!

The Library Gingerbread Man

I read a book with my girls tonight that would just be TOO good to NOT share!!!! The Library Gingerbread Man by Dotti Enderle is just quite a fun take on the Gingerbread Man story. I might be a bit biased, but it has to be one of my favorites!! The little gingerbread man gets out of his place at 398.2 (think Dewey Decimal!!) and off he goes past 423.1, 599.638 and many more! You can see how fun this book is with the Dewey Decimals incorporated into the story - what a fun way to learn. AND it culminates when he is soaring through the air into the fox's mouth and ....

SPOILER ALERT

"The clever librarian closed him back into his book. (It is particularly hard to outsmart a librarian.)"

Yep and THAT is yet another reason that I love this book - it made us chuckle - the girls and I both!!!

Jesus -- The Reason For the Season

Through the narrow scope of 2000 years, Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears to be one lucky woman. Chosen by God to give birth to His son, the Savior of the world? All right, Mary, way to go.

“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you,” Gabriel said.

How many of us would like a declaration like that? Highly favored. The Lord is with you. But Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

The angel told her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Mary’s seems confident and resolved when she responds, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

She’d just been told the Holy Spirit will come upon her, that God’s power will overshadow her, that she’d become with child even though she wasn’t married, and she said, “I’m the Lord’s servant. Let your words be true.”

I find this amazing! A young woman. Ancient Bethlehem. Unwed mother. They stoned women for such things in her day. But Mary believed in God. And submitted to His will. He gave her the Holy Spirit – the same Holy Spirit given to us. If He gave her confidence, He will give us confidence. Even though, like Mary, our situation seems impossible.

Listen to Mary’s song later on in the first chapter of Luke.

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me Holy is his name…”

Conceiving a child out of wedlock, by Divine intervention. Not a girl’s every day existence. Yet she had a Yes in her heart to God. She rejoiced. She boldly said, “Generations will remember me!”

How we struggle to trust God with our children. Our finances. Our emotional well-being. We worry. We fret. And wonder why we have no peace.

Christmas is the season where words like joy, peace and love are bantered around like Christmas candy. Let’s not take them as just words, but as truth. Let’s be like Mary and embrace God’s favor on our lives. Boldly declare "He’s done great things for me!”

Out of the grit of our own souls, we can reach His heart, and feel Him reaching for ours. No matter the pain of our past, present or future, God is there for us. He is able. Best of all, He is willing. “My soul glorifies the Lord this Christmas!”

The Panhandler's Breath

He slipped in sideways between the closing elevator doors, as if he were late to a meeting; he pressed the "5" without looking. Instead of suit and tie, though, baggy pants and faded navy hung on his tall, slim frame...and his stealth entry stiffened the hairs on the back of my neck.

I had noticed him a few seconds earlier, just after we had parted a sea of clamorous teens. He was smiling, grandfatherly, standing maybe 30 feet away where the electric shuttle picks up.

I had no idea he had been watching us, studying us, predator patiently awaiting his next prey.

The four of us were sealed in a four- by six-foot metal tomb. Tomb--that thought really scampered across my mind. I wondered if he had a knife in his pocket. I wanted to protect my son. Fight or flight pumped adrenaline but there was no where to run.

Extreme and ridiculous, these thoughts - and more - flashed through my mind. The Stranger began speaking.

"Yessir, I see you're a family man with your wife and your son here..." and he nodded in my and my son’s direction.

"...you see I'm homeless and all I've got..." and on queue, he reached into his left pocket and pulled out two old pennies blackened with age. Two cents to his name?! It was all too contrived, too practiced, and I didn't believe a word he was saying.

It was then I smelled it ~ the small space lent itself to that ~ and I doubted my doubt.

His breath.

It wasn't the scent of alcohol. His eyes weren't red, his voice didn't waver; his wizened face matched his graying hair.

His breath was morning's, zoo breath, the pet name I'd given to the scent inhaled when kissing my children awake when they were little.

He needed to brush his teeth. I wondered how long it had been since he brushed his teeth.

The elevator door opened and I handed him my leftover pizza as my son and I brushed past him. My husband handed him a bill and the Stranger thanked and God blessed him.

The elevator door closed behind us. Conflicted, I was relieved.

We got in the car and blurted first reaction--

"I didn't believe a word he said."

"That made me nervous."

"I wonder if he'll really eat the pizza."

In the quiet, we were left to our own thoughts, contemplating the right thing to do. At the end of the day, this is what I decided: It doesn't matter whether or not his story is true; for an old man to resort to begging, he has to be desperate. The money my husband gave him will never be missed. It was a reminder we've been entrusted with much and given much. Materially, yes, but more so spiritually. Loved, chosen, forgiven, redeemed, graced, lavished--every spiritual blessing. E v e r y.

There's a part of me that wishes I would have been brave enough to ask the man his story, made sure he knew he was loved...and bought him a tooth brush.

Later, it occurred to me he could have been an angel. Doesn’t that mean generosity, kindness and hospitality is always the right response? Then it's not about you or the stranger or the circumstance, it's about a simple, God-glorifying response.

Had we entertained an angel unaware? We'll never know.

But it wouldn't be the first time the Breath of Heaven smelled like a zoo.

Inside Out Christmas

My veterinarian friend, Dr. Katie, tells the story about the December when a woman brought a very sick black lab into her clinic. The dog was only ten months old, so she was really just a big puppy, but she’d been vomiting incessantly and her worried owner didn’t know what was wrong.

“Why don’t you go on home?” Dr. Katie told the owner. “I’ll need to run tests for about four hours. We’ll give you a call when we’re finished.”

Dr. Katie’s assistant took x-rays and hung them on the light panel for Dr. Katie to examine. Hmm. Something looked a little peculiar. Dr. Katie called her assistant over.

“Is it just me, or does that look like a … a camel to you?” she asked incredulously.

“Matter of fact, it does,” replied the astute assistant. “And look, there’s an angel here, a shepherd there, and down there in the colon, it’s Baby Jesus!”

At that moment the phone rang. It was the dog’s distraught owner. “I can’t believe this! I just got home and glanced at the coffee table where I put my manger scene yesterday. There’s nothing there but an empty stable!”

As I thought about this quite literal technique for internalizing the true meaning of Christmas, it occurred to me that sometimes I have the opposite problem. With all the bustling busyness, my inner joy in celebration of my savior’s birth never really makes it to the outside.

Oh, I have plenty of glittery, festive evidences of the holiday in decorations, baking galore, and gifts under my tree. But those things are for show. They’re merely the pretty wrappings, not the gift itself.

Can people really see the core-deep joy that radiates within me when I think of the true gift that Papa God sent the world in his son, Jesus? Is my immeasurable gratitude for eternal life evident as I dash through this hectic season?

I’m afraid all too often, the answer is no.

I’m just too preoccupied to allow my outside to reflect my inside so that nonbelievers recognize that I rejoice because of the hope that is within me. My joy is obscured by the mounds of clutter. Gratefulness is sucked out of my soul by the vacuum called urgency.

“But let the godly rejoice. Let them be glad in God’s presence. Let them be filled with joy” (Psalm 68:3, NLT).

This verse has become my prayer this Christmas season – that I would make the time to give priority to rejoicing, being glad in God’s presence, and letting my inner joy show for those who may be silently desperate to know the giver of true joy.

Yep, there’s a better way to internalize the gift of Christmas than the black lab technique. We can lodge the Little Lord Jesus in our hearts rather than our colons.

Simple or Sparkle?

It’s a simple ornament made of thin cheap metal and it looks quite out of place on our CHRISTmas tree. But each year I lovingly and safely nestle it amongst its expensive and sparkly peers, without a care as to how unglamorous it appears.

Many of our CHRISTmas ornaments have a story and an uncanny way of welling up emotion in me, but this certain one causes an intense stir.

You see the ornament is engraved with the name of my grandmother, Sara, and was given to me by my mother, who ordered it from Hospice, after Grandmama’s death. Yes, the months leading up to her death carry memories of a frail and failing grandmama, but that ornament carries my thoughts to sweet CHRISTmas memories of the past.

CHRISTmas Eve dinners in her home, laughing, singing, gathering and celebrating a year filled with blessings as we remembered the birth of our Savior. CHRISTmas mornings, she was always there participating with glee, in our raucous CHRISTmas happiness. Her gifts were always bank envelopes gently tucked into the pine needles of our CHRISTmas tree, fresh cut from the property she grew up on.

All memories of my Grandmama make my heart swell. You see she was my Jesus with skin on. She lived her life full of joy, serving others and approached life selflessly with an attitude of, “What can I do for you?”

Just months before she left us, even as the Alzheimer’s was robbing her mind she shared her love of Jesus with a sweet little old lady friend, who came to know the Lord – a divine appointment. The very next day that little old lady silently slipped away to meet in person the One Sara introduced her to just the day before.

At the time I wept, realizing that regardless of our own frailties and failings, God can still use those of us who are willing to do His work and are well practiced at hearing His voice...no matter our lack of sparkle in comparison to others.

A simple life lived for Him, a simple ornament in memory of Sara...a simple truth for you to ponder.

Enjoy the Ride!

We sit poised on the top of a cliff, a near drop off before us, that falls to a rushing river. In the middle, a bridge of snow and ice hints at our destination. My husband guns the snowmobile engine. “Ready?”

Ready? For a face plant into a tree, maybe reconstructive surgery? To feel my stomach ripped from my body as we plummet down the mountain? Let’s do it!

We live on five acres of woods in northern Minnesota that butts up to a national forest. Hence, our backyard is about a hundred thousand acres. Aside from harboring deer, lynx, fox, cougar and bear, it also makes excellent snowmobile terrain. And not long ago, Mrs. Claus gave her Santa a snowmobile for two.

I love snowmobiling. Flying over the snow, catching air over drifts. I love to drive, to be at the helm of the beast as I weave around trees and over hill and dale, my husband sitting behind me. I also love riding behind my husband as he drives, feeling those powerful arms as he’s muscling the snowmobile into the wilds. We follow unknown trails, driven by a Magellan spirit, hoping that we have enough gas to get us back to civilization. I love hanging on, simply trusting him, knowing that wherever he’s taking me, he’s going first.

But there are times, when I see where he’s taking me, and I just have to bury my head in his back. Like straight down a cliff.

However, my heart cheers, despite the terror as we gun it down the hill, over the river, up the opposite side. And, if we hadn’t let ourselves go, we would have never discovered the beauty of a winter river, a hidden jewel buried deep in the forest. Nor the exhilaration of facing the challenge together.

Further on, we find an enchanted forest of towering white pine. Catch a view of Lake Superior, discover an old cabin in the woods.

It occurs to me that snowmobiling is much like my spiritual life. Occasionally, I drive, and it’s me setting our course, weaving through the trees, getting us hopelessly lost. But when God takes the “wheel” and I hang on, trusting Him for the speed and destination, I see the scenery. I trust him to keep me safe. I trust him to bring me home, where there is an eternal supply of hot chocolate.

As Christmas season becomes more hectic, what if I let God drive? Maybe everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and maybe I don’t have to control every tradition, every holiday nuance. What if I just held on for the ride?

I’ll bet I’ll still get there, and I might even enjoy the scenery along the way.

Family Traditions: A Glimpse into Christmas Future

Have you ever thought about family traditions? As I helped my 1-year-old place ornaments on the Christmas tree this year I imagined her doing the same thing with her children—and maybe even grandchildren—one day. Traditions are beliefs and customs handed down through generations. By sharing meaningful moments with your kids you're sending yourself into the future. How amazing is that?

Sharing family traditions cause us to slow down from the busy, adult world for a while. We ignore the laundry to set out the nativity set with our kids. We set aside time in our schedules to drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Holiday traditions aren't only fun, they also help strength family bonds. Through traditions kids trust in the security of family unit. They think, “This is our family and this is what I do.” Of course, the most important thing to share isn't just what we do ... but why. Why do we put out a nativity? To remind us the real meaning of the season—Jesus coming to earth. What do the Christmas lights represent displayed on homes and on trees? They represent the Light of the World, Jesus.

Using traditions to bond our families and share our faith isn't new. I love these two Scriptures that talk about that very thing.

Exodus 12:25 says, “When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony.”

Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

Let The Baby Grow Up This Christmas

When I was a little girl, Christmas seemed to take forever to make its way back to our little house on the end of a dirt road called Bull Run in northeast Louisiana. We kids started counting down the days before the leaves ever began turning. Sure, the adults said it came once a year but I wasn't so sure. Once Santa Claus left our humble abode it seemed like light years before he found his way back to the Delta.

That was a child's perspective. I imagine it hasn't changed all that much for today's kids. On the other hand, I'm operating under a completely different time frame these days. It seems like it was just yesterday when I pulled the boxes down from the attic and began pulling out the nativity scene, the miniature lights, and the keepsake ornaments. And now, just that fast-- Christmas Day is right around the corner. Soon the tree will be striped naked and the piled up presents will all be distributed. After a few more day it'll be hard to remember who got what from whom, and once again, I'll start packing all the decorations away for another year.

I was thinking about how bare and cold the house always looks after the holidays when I realized that, sadly, this scene would play itself out in many hearts as well. A lot of people will have had expectations that weren't filled and many of those same souls will be left with hurts that don't seem to heal. Unless this year is remarkably different from past seasons, my bet is, the New Year will bring magazines full of articles on combating depression and the talk shows will have experts on offering ways to fill the long days ahead and cure the winter blues.

I'm no expert, dear readers, but I'd like to offer you a suggestion that will go far beyond the creature comforts of a nice warm bath or a delicious bowl of hot soup. Your heart doesn't have to be bare and naked after the holidays. Do you want to know the real secret? It's simple, really. Don't pack up Christ with Christmas! As beautiful and special as the Christmas story is, it's only a part of heaven's miracle. The Christ child grew into a man and the man became a Savior.

This year, may we be determined to let the babe from Bethlehem live on in our hearts. If we'll allow Him to become the Messiah He was born to be, the joy of Christmas can be ours all year long.

The Snowflake Party

The first snow of winter hasn’t fallen yet, but in our kitchen tonight we’re doing a pretty good imitation. The whole family is circled around the huge old oak table. The snip, snip, snip of scissors is background music as tiny scraps of white paper float down, making our floor look like a giant brownie sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Tonight has turned out to be the night for our annual Snowflake Party, a tradition that began when our children were toddlers. There has never been a date blocked out in red on our calendar, but one day we wake up and the brisk autumn air has turned bitter cold. Naked tree branches trace their stark calligraphy on a dull grey sky and we need a taste of the joyful promises of Christmas and snow. It’s the perfect time for a party.

On such a day, one of the kids will fly in the back door, fresh home from school, and declare “Hey, Mom! Tonight would be a good night for the Snowflake Party!” First we round up every pair of scissors in the house. This is one time when sharing is not a virtue. While the kids search for scissors, I cut white paper into squares and fold them caddy-corner multiple times. The resulting triangles are artfully arranged in a basket, awaiting the beginning of the party.

Later, while the supper dishes dry on the counter, I recruit a volunteer to help me stir up a big pot of hot cocoa. For the next hour it will warm on the back burner, tantalizing us with its aroma.

Now the fun begins with careful cutting and snipping, shaping plain white paper into intricate works of art. Each snowflake we create seems as unique and spectacular as the genuine variety created by God himself. As each masterpiece is unfolded, collective oohs and aahs go up.

When the last dregs of our creative juices are drained, Dad oversees the vacuum patrol while I pour cocoa into generous mugs. We spread our handiwork on the floor around us and sit, quietly admiring our work while we dunk marshmallows and sip rich chocolate.

With empty mugs piled up in the sink, it’s time for the judging to begin. There will be awards for ‘prettiest’, ‘most unusual’, and as many other categories as we need for everyone to be a winner. Dad is the judge because he studied art in college. He also usually wins one of the top prizes––because he studied art in college.

Snowflakes deemed runners-up might be pasted in scrapbooks or hung on the refrigerator. A few even “melt” into the trash that very night. But the winners are taped proudly to the picture windows in the living room for passersby to enjoy while they long for the day when genuine snowflakes will color the world clean and white.

Our oldest daughter went away to college last September. She called just after Thanksgiving to tell me that her dorm window was covered with snowflakes. No, not the real thing, but the ones she remembers from her childhood––paper ones that she spent an entire evening cutting and snipping while sipping hot cocoa.

That’s the neat thing about traditions: They go with us no matter how far from home we travel.

Why I Decorate for Christmas

An old cassette tape of Christmas carols—received in a package twenty years ago when we had first arrived in France as missionaries—fills our den with delightful piano music as I place one more ornament on the already over-laden Christmas tree. This one is a little white wooden rabbit with pink ears that move back and forth. It actually doesn’t look much like a Christmas ornament, but I bought it for our baby Andrew when my husband Paul was in seminary, and I was working for less than minimum wage in the library. This ornament was literally all I could afford.

As I hang it on the tree today, I get goose bumps and then a rush of warmth. And that’s why I decorate for Christmas. Not to impress but to remember. I remember those lean, lean years, and God’s faithful provision for us.

There are the cross-stitched ornaments I made our first year in Montpellier—for the boys (for by now we had two sons) and Paul and me. How I ever had time to do that, I don’t know. I remember our puny little tree—the kind they sold in France back then—in a pot so that it could be replanted later. We perched that tiny tree on a small table out of baby Christopher’s reach. I guess I watered it too much, because about halfway through December, it started smelling and then stinking, and it rotted there on Christmas Day!

I smile with these memories.

I look at the other ornaments on the tree. Many were purchased—one for each boy—when we attended conferences around Europe, and that makes me smile too. Getting to travel on a missionary’s budget to exotic places! There are the waxed red bear and red baby carriage from Wales, the brightly painted clay sun and moon from Portugal, the blue and white porcelain windmill and wooden shoes from Holland, the hand-blown glass Snoopys sitting on gondolas from Venice, and the delicately decorated eggs from Prague.

Other ornaments include the little pinkish shiny ball ornament with Paul’s name written in glitter—I think he made it when he was about six , and the little red velvet bows, bought at Michael’s after Christmas one year for a dollar. They bring a unifying theme to the tree. I say this, smiling, because our tree is, and has always been throughout the years, a hodge-podge of our life. And I like it that way. I don’t think I could ever have a ‘theme’ tree. Mine is a ‘memory’ tree.

The music plays softly in the background and I smile through tears, remembering God’s incredible faithfulness to call and keep us here in France for so many years. Heart-breakingly hard years, overwhelmingly joyful years—the same years, the same amazing God, our keeper.

Before we left for the mission field, I memorized Psalm 121 in English and in French, and over the years I have held on tight to those last beautiful words of the psalm: The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever. (NASB)

Of course He will. He is God with us.

We decorate to remember Christmases past, our lives, our legacy, and mostly, for those of us who have embraced Christ, we decorate to honor and praise Him for coming to us—Emmanuel! We make our homes ready to receive the Christ Child, with soft music and candles burning and the sweet flickering of angel wings on an over-laden evergreen.

Where is Comfort and Joy Found?

The year 2006 ushered unwelcome emotions into my life. My husband was unhappy in his job, two of my grown children were making poor choices, my mother-in-law was showing signs of Alzheimer’s, extended-family issues were surfacing, and I was writing a book. Things only got worse. Much worse.

Early in 2007, I was asked to represent the mentoring ministry for wives I founded, Beautiful Womanhood, and lead a women’s conference in Uganda, Africa. My husband wasn’t sure if traveling to Africa was a good idea, so we committed it to prayer. While we were listening for an answer, I sensed God asking me to fast from spending, except for groceries, for thirty days. Sometimes you know that you’ve heard God’s voice because you’d never have come up with those words on your own. This was one of those times. I’d never heard of a fast from spending. Tom needed no convincing that a fast from spending came directly from the mouth of God. He still gets excited just thinking about it!

During the fast, it became clear I had used spending as a way to gain a comfort fix. When I was spending money, I felt carefree and lighthearted. Instead of dwelling on the unpleasantness in my life, I was thinking of my purchases and how they would bring me pleasure. Not until I stopped spending did I realize how short-lived the fix really was. During the fast, when I felt the urge to spend—to anesthetize my pain—I pictured myself running into the arms of Jesus, the Great Comforter. Oh, what comfort I received!

One night, I told good friends my experience of gaining comfort through the power of the Holy Spirit rather than money. I exclaimed that I had never felt so comforted. One friend then told us about a dream he’d had shortly after hearing about the invitation from Uganda. After the dream, he had awoken and recorded the following thoughts:

“. . . this is for Sandy. Christ’s redemption of women is beautiful. Beautiful Womanhood is a result of redemptive wholeness. The visuals the ministry uses on the books, etc., are like a piece of beautifully veneered furniture. There is something going on with the ministry to the brokenness of abused women. In Uganda, there are hurting, abused women, and something is connecting their need and Beautiful Womanhood. Though there is nothing wrong with veneer, it is only the topping—the covering, and without good structure it is shallow and will not hold up. It is time to add a new depth to the ministry.”

Then these verses came to my friend’s mind:

All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. You can be sure that the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NL

When my friend was finished sharing, everyone in the room broke down in tears, praising God for His work in my life. I’d learned to listen and God had spoken. I’d obeyed, and He’d acted. When He acted, I was changed.

Needless to say, I packed my bags and experienced some of the best days of my life in Uganda—offering God’s comfort to His troubled women.

I love birds - always have - I've had them in my home - I've watched them outside - I've listened for their calls in the early morning hours. So when I find a book about birds - I can't wait to read it. My latest read, Flyaway by Lucy Christopher, did not disappoint! This is a wonderful "bird book" - it is a sweet story and at the heart of it is a father and daughter and their love of birds. There are lots of tender moments in this book - the father is having serious heart problems and may die, Isla must learn how to deal with her father's illness, a grandfather that acts like he doesn't care for anyone, a swan that does not seem to know how to fly, and her new friend, Harry, and his possible terminal-illness. There are so many little sidelines going on in this book - but it all comes together beautifully to tell a heart-warming tale. DO not miss this one - highly recommend it!!

Advent

Consider the bride's walk down the aisle. We all know where that woman in the white is going but somehow waiting for her to arrive at the altar is an essential part of the ceremony. In fact, the waiting is so essential that even cheapskate Vegas chapels include wedding marches.

Why?

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

At Christmas time, we tend to forget this essential truth about anticipation. We're lost to shopping malls and checklists, rushing toward December 25th so quickly that we forget the quiet joy of the month's other 24 days -- and then we wonder why we feel so empty on the 26th, amid ribbons and wrapping paper and our best intentions.

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

And that is why Advent is so important to Christmas.

I'm as guilty as the next harried person. This Advent was particularly tricky because just six hours before it started, I was still trying to finish a 110,000-word novel that was written over the course of the year -- written while homeschooling my kids, keeping my hubby happy, and generally making sure the house didn't fall down around us.

It's an understatement to say my free time is limited. But waiting adds meaning, and Advent is crucial to Christmas, so I've devised several Advent traditions that are simple, powerful and easy to keep even amid the seasonal rush.

When my kids outgrew the simple Advent calendars around age 7, I stole an idea from my writer friend Shelly Ngo (as T.S. Eliot said, "Mediocre writers borrow. Great writers steal." Indulge me.)

Here's how it goes: Find 24 great Christmas books, wrap them individually and place then under the tree. On the first day of Advent, take turns picking which book to open. When we did this, we would cuddle under a blanket and read aloud -- oh, the wonder, the magic! We savored "The Polar Express," howled with "How Murray Saved Christmas," and fell silent at the end of "The Tale of The Three Trees" (note: some of the picture books I chose were not explicitly about Christmas but they always echoed the message that Jesus came to earth to save us from ourselves and to love us beyond our wildest imagination. In that category, Angela Hunt's retelling of The Three Trees definitely hits the Yuletide bull's eye).

This Advent tradition lasted for about five years. It gave us rich daily discussions about the season's real meaning, without being religious or legalistic, and it increased family couch time. But like the lift-the-flap calendars, my kids outgrew the picture books.

Because the wait adds meaning, and Advent is crucial, I prayed for another way to celebrate anticipation of Christmas. By the grace of God, last year I found an enormous Advent calendar on clearance at Pottery Barn. Made of burlap, it has large pockets big enough to hold some serious bounty.

But my husband and I didn't want the kids focusing only on the materialist stuff for Advent -- we already fight that on Christmas day. We decided to fill the daily pockets with simple necessities and small gift cards. We also printed out the nativity story from Luke 2:1-21 in a large-sized font and cut each verse out. From Day 1 to Day 21, there is one verse to read aloud. The kids memorize it, then get to open their present (again, on alternating days for each person). Then we tape the verse to the wall in order. By Day 22, all the verses are on the wall, in order, and the kids now try to recite the entire nativity story from memory. That's not as difficult as it sounds because they've been memorizing one verse each day. Still, the entire recitation -- verbatim -- usually requires Day 23 and Day 24. Whoever does memorize the entire thing -- without mistakes -- earns a bonus gift of $25.

Does that sounds extravagant?

It is.

Because we want our kids to understand that God came down and humbled himself and taught us about love right before He suffered and died on behalf of the undeserving -- which is every one of us.

"That's" extravagant.

And in the waiting, we find even more meaning.

A Christmas of Kindness

"You can give without loving, but you can¹t love without giving." Amish proverb

I do it every year.

I plan for a simpler, less stressful Christmas season and, every year, by Christmas Eve I'm exhausted! After our delicious and very-time-consuming-to-make traditional Swedish meal to honor my husband¹s relatives (think: Vikings), it's time to head to church. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but the last few Christmas Eve's, I have sent my husband and kids head off without me. The pull to spend an hour of quiet in the house feels as strong as a magnet.

It's odd. My children are young adults now. Wouldn't you think that Christmas would be simpler? Instead, it's just the opposite. Jugging schedules to share the grandbaby with the in-laws, trying to include our elderly parents at the best time of day for them, dancing carefully around recently divorced family members whose children are impacted by the shards of broken relationships.

The thing is: you can simplify your to-do list, but you can't really simplify people. We are just a complicated bunch.

Here's where I borrow a lesson about simplicity from the Amish. It's easy to get distracted with the buggies and the bonnets and the beards, but there's so much more to learn from these gentle people if you're willing to look a little deeper.

Yes, they live with less "stuff" and that does make for a simpler, less cluttered life. But it's the reason behind it that is so compelling to me: they seek to create margin in their life. Not just empty spacebut space that is available to nourish family, community, and faith. Their Christmas is far less elaborate than yours or mine, but what they do fill it with is oh so right.

Christmas comes quietly on an Amish farmhouse. There is no outward sign of the holiday as we know it: no bright decorations, no big tree in the living room corner. A few modest gifts are waiting for children at their breakfast place settings, covered by a dishtowel. Waiting first for Dad to read the story of Christ's birth from the book of Luke. Waiting until after a special breakfast has been enjoyed. Waiting until Mom and Dad give the signal that the time has come for gifts.

Later, if Christmas doesn't fall on a Sunday, extended family and friends will gather for another big meal. If time and weather permits, the late afternoon will be filled with ice skating or sledding. And more food! Always, always an abundance of good food. Faith, family, and community. That is the focus of an Amish Christmas.

And it's also how the story begins for A Lancaster County Christmas, as a young family prepares for Christmas. A winter storm blows a non-Amish couple, Jaime and C.J. Fitzpatrick, off-course and into the Riehl farmhouse. An unlikely and tentative friendship develops, until the one thing Mattie and Sol hold most dear disappears and then. Ah, but you¹ll just have to read the story to find out what happens next. Without giving anything away, I will say that I want to create a Mattie-inspired margin this Christmas season. Mattie knew inconveniences and interruptions that come in the form of people (big ones and little ones!) are ordained by God. And blessed by God.

Creating margin probably means that I won't get Christmas cards out until the end of January, and my house won't be uber-decorated. After all, something has to give. But it will mean I make time for a leisurely visit with my dad at his Alzheimer's facility. And time to volunteer in the church nursery for a holiday-crowded event. And time to invite a new neighbor over for coffee. Hopefully, it will mean that my energy won't get diverted by a frantic, self-imposed agenda. Only by God's agendathe essence of true simplicity.

And that includes taking time to worship Christ's coming at the Christmas Eve service. You can hold me accountable! This year, I will be there.

Just a quick note before the series begins on the 14th ...

As I write this, I imagine that we are sitting at my kitchen table and chatting over a cup of coffee while familiar Christmas carols celebrate the Season. My twelve year old Chihuahua, Pongo, barks for a pinch of pound cake while my Shih Tzu, Lilly, patiently sits by the chair and waits for a crumb to fall.

My name is not Martha Stewart, and I will never receive a neighborhood beautification award. Just look at my front stoop. Yes, my never-had-time-to-carve-the-pumpkin-that-now-suffers-from-frostbite slouches next to the front door which is decorated with a Christmas wreath. I plan to roll this large orange ornament to the garbage pile tomorrow. For now, however, I will pretend that my front stoop is a contemplative modern art exhibit capturing the essence of contrast.

Actually, I love the concept of juxtaposition – placing things together that don’t seem to belong together, yet somehow ultimately make sense being paired. A personal example for me this season is the phrase: “comfort and joy.” Having just completed my manuscript for New Hope Publishers about the aftermath of grief, I fully understand the contrast of those two words. How can comfort bring joy? How can one find joy in loss?

Perhaps, dear reader, you have experienced loss this year – loss of a loved one, loss of friendship, loss of health, loss of financial security, loss of trust, loss of love, or loss of direction. Even with the best intent, words of encouragement shared by others can somehow seem insufficient to address an inconsolable loss. A spoken word cannot fully restore joy to a broken heart; however the Word can. And that’s the bottom line message of Christmas! God gave us the most amazing gift: His Son - the Word of God, the Holy Comforter.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

You are not alone this Christmas, dear friend. Juxtaposed to the unexpected grit in life is the gift of God’s grace wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. This year I purposely placed a pearl in the Nativity scene as a metaphoric reminder. When we place our grit into the hands of the Lord, His grace transforms our pain into a pearl.

“Joy to the world!”

This little book is an amazing work of art - I do not want you to miss this! Heidi Hanseen has put together a booklet titled Holy Stable that includes story, music, and a nativity play that is truly all ready to be performed. The CD includes background music and song for your performance - the music is beautiful - the harp, oh my!! The entire play took me a little over 10 minutes to listen to - it was gorgeous and put my heart right in the spirit of the season.

I just love it that this is so do-able - small groups, homeschool groups, family outings - you don't need a large production to share God's love and this is such a wonderful way to do it - and all of the work is done for you - it is perfect!! Thank you Heidi for a gift for all of us!

So B. It resonated with me - loved EVERYTHING about it - so when I saw that Sarah Weeks had a new novel - I was hoping I would be in line to review it! Pie, Weeks' latest novel, is again - a hit! Our junior readers are going to love this mystery all about pie!! Alice's favorite aunt, Polly, dies - and not only is that sad because Polly was one of the few people that Alice could connect with, but it also means that Aunt Polly's famous pies will come to an end. Aunt Polly was known all around for her fabulous pies and awards she had earned for those pies. So when the will is read and Alice is given Aunt Polly's cat, LARDO, the family can not figure out why the famous recipe is left to the cat AND what that means for them! Here is a new author that you don't want to miss! For our younger readers (3rd-6th or Junior High), Eve Yohalem has written, Escape Under the Forever Sky. A wonderful story written about a U.S. Ambassador's daughter that goes with her parents to Ethiopia to live while her mother serves as Ambassador there. Lucy, age 13, has many encounters while she is there, not the least of which is being kidnapped and held for ransom. That is when the story takes an exciting turn and you travel with Lucy as she tries to escape and find safety. This really is a fun book - it is a riveting ride that keeps you going right to the very end!

Watching the Tree Limbs

Sometimes you read a book and it's painful - to the core painful - that is this book by Mary DeMuth, Watching the Tree Limbs. It made me ache for dear Maranatha (Mara for short - no irony there!) and in her short nine years all of the pain she had to endure. BUT, despite the gut-wrenching story - it was a wonderful read - totally kept me engrossed and wrapped up in Mara's world. I do highly recommend this book - it hits hard on so many levels - and I highlighted my Kindle version all up - for fiction, that's saying something!! There are just some fabulous quotes that remind us how much our God lavishes us with His love - even when it doesn't feel that way here on Earth. Truly inspiring!

Now onto the sequel - Wishing on Dandelions.

Razzle-Dazzle Ruby

If you have not seen this book - then you MUST. Masha D'yans' Razzle-Dazzle Ruby is such a wonderful children's pop-up book! Truly - I have not seen such a fun book in quite some time!! Scholastic has a winner with this one! It is the story of Ruby, who, by the way, is a delightful main character, and the day she goes for a walk with her dog, Rocket. She has wonderful adventures in the snow (OH - maybe that's why I LOVE this book SO much!!) and the illustrations are magnificent!! There are dials to turn, tabs to pull, and even a snowman that twirls - spectacular - and one you will read OVER and OVER!!

Benny's Angel

Laura Allen Nonemaker's book, Benny's Angel, is a sweet story for our younger kids. I LOVED her allegory of flowers in a garden and how Count Slime can come along and take all of their beauty and make it so we can not see how beautiful they really are. My favorite part of the story is when Marietta, the angel, comes and says:

"The flowers brought you great joy. If you keep praying and act as if they are still growing in the garden, Count Slime will see that he can not steal your joy. He will give up and leave your garden alone. The roots of the plants will grow strong and deep again and your beautiful flowers will return."

And I say a hearty "amen" to that - I've had some Count Slime's in my life too - and what a fabulous picture for our young ones to see as they build their faith in a God who can also help "us to grow strong and deep" as we learn how to counteract our Count Slimes!!

The Christmas Village

I want to introduce you to a book that is sure to be holiday pleaser!! I do not find many chapter books with the Christmas theme so I was pleased when I was sent this book. Melissa Ann Goodwin's The Christmas Village is a book I know our younger readers will enjoy! It is the story of Jamie Reynolds - a boy going through a tough time at home with his family - but when he goes to his Grandma's house for the holidays, he is transported to a new world through the little Christmas Village set up in his grandparent's home. I loved this - it is well-written and keeps you reading to find out what will happen. Life isn't always "wonderful" but I love how this author uses stories to transport the reader to another world and show how sometimes that can be therapy for us all!!

The Always War

Margaret Peterson Haddix has written some excellent books for our junior high and teen readers - her latest, The Always War, is no exception. Haddix is famous for drawing you in on the first page and that is exactly what she did again. This futuristic novel is set in the war-torn United States - it is very intriguing - you get a glimpse of what war might look like in the future. I had not thought of how the fighting might look in the future - it was interesting - and brought up many questions. This would be a great book discussion book - HIGHLY recommend it!

The Promise of Deer Run

I was sent book two of the Deer Run Saga - The Promise of Deer Run by Elaine Marie Cooper. I was not sure this one would catch me at all - and then I started it - I SO enjoyed this book. It is a calm, easy read - but one that has an endearing storyline - I loved the story of Nathaniel and Sarah and the history of the aftermath of the American Revolution. I would highly recommend this book AND the series - I am off to find Book One and be on the waiting list for Book Three!! I would even recommend this one to our Young Adult readers - I think it spans generations. Watch the book trailer here. The story is just so well written - hmmm, could it be because the author is an Iowan!?!?!

Smart Ones

I was given the opportunity to try Weight Watchers new Smart Ones Satisfying Selections. And now I am about to gloat on them for a bit!!! I was VERY pleasantly surprised - I am not usually a fan of prepackaged meals - ESPECIALLY when they are warmed in the microwave. Now these meals do have two options - stovetop or microwave and so I braved it and warmed mine in the microwave. Talk about easy - put the vented bag in the microwave for 4 and a half minutes and then let sit for 2 more minutes. Then pour onto a plate and eat!

So I chose to try the Chicken with Broccoli and Cheese first - and as I put it out onto my plate I knew I was in trouble. My seven year old said, "I would have chosen that if I had known that was a choice!!" Yep - I ended up sharing and she LOVED it. (As did I!!) This is a very filling portion size, large, tender pieces of meat, wonderful cheese sauce (and just ask my husband - I am NOT always a fan of cheese sauces!!), VERY easy to make, and I came away pleasantly full. I was very impressed with this new product - and I am sharing it around and WILL be buying them again - the price is very reasonable for the size of lunch - you can't beat a meal for under $4.00!!

The Grace Effect

When I first started reading the prologue for this book, The Grace Effect, I thought, "I am going to give this one to my husband - I think it's too deep for me!" But as I got into Chapter 1, I knew I was going to LOVE this book and I didn't put it down (well almost anyway) until I was DONE! It is an exceptional book - it is, at it's core, a wonderful adoption story - the author, Larry Alex Taunton's, story of travelling to the Ukraine and their roller coaster ride to get their 10 year old daughter, Sasha. But interwoven throughout that story, is the story of Taunton's challenge in life - to get people to see that the world IS a better place with Christianity and Christ - How Grace makes life palatable. Taunton travels the world sharing and debating this truth - how we all need Grace. But woven in Sasha's adoption story, this truth is all the more seen and recognized through the life of this little girl.

Elisabeth Gifford's The House of Hope is quite a story - one that I won't soon forget. It is the story of Robin and Joyce Hill, how they give up a wealthy lifestyle to instead, live frugally and minister to "the least of these." They choose to open a home for orphans needing urgent care and terminally ill orphans in China rather than live for themselves. This is one of those books that I just could not stop reading - it tore at my heart - but it made me smile too. The Hills are making a difference - they are pouring into lives that are sometimes looked at as "minor" or "unimportant" - they are LIVING Matthew 25:40, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

I highly recommend this book that will challenge you - and at the very least - encourage you to remember the Hills when you pray.

My Salon Doll

I am on the lookout for Christmas over here and I ran across this!! My Salon Doll is a newer doll out on the market, much like the American Girl counterpart, BUT you can actually wash, style, and dry her hair!! Oh yes, my girls are thinking this is SOMETHING!! Watch this short video to see how the hair is assembled on the dolls.

There are three different dolls to choose from - and because they are 18 inches - any clothes you might have that fit other 18 inch dolls will work on them as well! Make sure to go check them out on Facebook too! Just don't let your daughters see the girls styling, curling, and washing these dolls' hair - if they are anything like my girls - you won't hear about anything else for awhile!!! :)

You've probably heard this great story - but you haven't SEEN this beautiful version, I am sure!! It is brand new and such a wonderful retelling of the touching story of The Three Trees. Each tree wants to be something magnificent - and we see how each will accomplish that - how they each play a part in the life of THE KING. Elena Pasquali has given the story such a wonderful feel and Sophie Windham has illustrated it so tenderly that you feel like you need to turn the pages carefully - so as not to disturb the beauty of this children's story. I highly recommend this updated version of a very touching story - and as if you needed more encouragement to read it - I finished reading it with my girls and they both said, "Can I take it to bed and look at it?!" There is so much to see and appreciate in this fabulous story!

You NEED to be familiar with Sigrid Weidenweber!!! She is a fabulous author that has written a novel called Catherine and tells the story of the great monarch of Russia. She brings this interesting time in history alive with her story line of Catherine the Great. It is a strong story - well-written and one that is FULL of history. You see how the people lived, feel the violence and terror in the times, and also feel like you are witnessing the great tragedies as well. I found it very interesting and refreshing. It wasn't typical for me - it was fresh and full of energy. I WILL be back for the second in this trilogy! This is part of a trilogy - the Volga Flows Forever Trilogy.

Kisses From Katie

I am an avid book lover and reader - that is a "Bibliophile" for you that like big words!!! :) So I read a lot - and I enjoy many different types of books. BUT this one hooked me and has given me food to mull around in my mind for days - even after I have finished. It is the story of Katie Davis and her choice to move to Uganda after high school - leave her family, her friends, her youth, her home in Tennessee, and her boyfriend and live in Uganda and just be "Jesus" to all around her. She is amazing in my mind - but she would not want me to say that - she is humble and she spills her life story in her book, Kisses From Katie. While she is in Uganda, Katie adopts (yes, she is a single mom under 20 years old) 14 (yep, you read that right too!!) dear Ugandan children. They become her new family and her triumphs and trials will totally encourage you. I do not want you to miss her story - she is being used mightily in Uganda and around the world with her ministry, Amazima, that feeds and sends hundreds of children to school while teaching them about Jesus. You DO need to read the book -but also follow her story on her blog - Kisses from Katie.

We're looking to work with authors who are savvy with social media - those who blog, tweet and update their Facebook status on a daily basis. Our preference is for authors who already have a book(s) published through a royalty-paying press. We want to work with those who are familiar with the ins and outs of the publishing process. We seek those who have experience having their work edited and know the effort required for successful book promotion.

How long once an author is accepted to the publishing date?

From acceptance to publishing, we try to shoot for a 90 day time frame. We edit the manuscript and prepare files that are ready for the Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.

4. How many authors does Tribute Books have?

At this time, we have published about 35 authors, illustrators, photographers and editors.

5. Is there a specific genre you're looking for?

We are looking to concentrate on the young adult genre.

Dewey's Nine Lives

The Kitchen Daughter

Jael McHenry's The Kitchen Daughter was a novel I just could not put down. Maybe it intrigued me that the main character has some Autistic tendencies - maybe that was it - but whatever it was - it caught me and I was hooked! This novel is a touching story about family, loss, and how to deal with both! Ginny is the adult daughter left alone when both of her parents are killed unexpectedly. She knows she might be a bit different from others - but she does not feel she is not "normal". She knows techniques to use to calm herself and most of those involve food or cooking. So she spends a lot of time in the kitchen and is shocked to find out that if she makes recipes that are hand-written, she can meet with the ghosts of those people. Normally that might turn me off right there - but it was handled so well that I almost believed it could happen! What a wonderful novel - this isn't a story like any other I have read but yet it sure resonated with me! Excellent read!

If My Body Is a Temple, Then I Was a Megachurch

I thoroughly enjoyed Scott Davis' If My Body is a Temple, Then I Was a Megachurch!! This is a hilarious read that not only gives you great advice for losing weight safely, but also adds scripture behind it to give us, as Believers, Biblical reasons for losing weight as well. I enjoy Davis' sense of humor and down-to-earth reasoning. There is no magic formula - he admits that - but you can take principles and apply them to help yourself view weight loss in a new light - one that makes sense and is do-able. You will be encouraged and challenged - and we can all use that!!

A Dog's Way Home

This is a delightful book that will resound with every dog-lover out there. It is a novel that our junior middle age readers will certainly enjoy. The story is tender and sometimes even hard to read for those of us that have a soft spot for dogs, but SO worth the read. Pyron has captured it - the love we can develop for a dog is one that can not be matched!! Join in on Abby's story as she loses her best friend and dog, Tam - the story that takes up after that loss is surely to be savored over and over. We get to see Abby's struggle as she hopes and waits for Tam to return home and we see Tam's story as he tries to survive in a cruel wilderness. Wonderful chapter book for our 3rd-6th grade readers!

The Baker's Wife

Erin Healy has hit one out of the park - this is an author to watch!! The Baker's Wife was a book I honestly could not put down! It is the story of Audrey, the Pastor's Wife, and her ability to feel the pain of others - physically FEEL their pain. This isn't the wonderful gift that one might think - it is so difficult for her to distinguish what that pain is telling her, that's it's really quite a frustrating gift. In the midst of some other trials in their lives - Audrey and her husband are forced to leave the ministry and it only spirals downward from there. This is when Audrey becomes the Baker's Wife AND becomes the lead suspect in a murder. This is a great read - the characters are well-developed and the storyline is strong! She is on my "Authors to Watch" list!

*The Kitchen Daughter by Jael McHenry - I do not know how this came across my radar, but I started it today and it is QUITE good so far!!

*Message From an Unknown Chinese Mother by Xinran - This has been on my TBR pile for ages!! I started reading one chapter last night and can hardly put it down. NOT easy to read, but I do feel it will really help me in the future!

*Prodigal God by Timothy Keller - starting this as a study for a women's group - POWERFUL - that is all I can say. Can't wait to keep delving in!!

*Rest Assured by Bill Ewing - just went to a seminar that followed this book - now I can't wait to read the book and be challenged again - WOW - great stuff here!

*Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley - bought this one cheap on my Kindle App - looked intriguing and I am excited to get reading it.

Now, that I've signed up, does that guarantee I'll have free time!?!?!

The Year of Fog

Michelle Richmond's The Year of Fog - somehow came across my radar. I can't even remember who or what suggested I read it - but I had it on my list and finally got to reading it. This is quite a compelling read - the story starts as Abby, soon to be wife to Jake and mom to Emma, takes Emma on a trip to the beach. As they are there, Abby looks away to photograph a baby seal, and Emma disappears. The rest of the book is Abby's search for Emma - even when Abby's own father gives up the search. It is difficult to read as you trudge through the days with Abby - days with seemingly no hope of finding this little girl that has suddenly vanished off the face of the earth. Although I felt at spots that it got long and sluggish, I am glad I finished - I think that is just what Richmond was trying to accomplish - to have us feel what Abby may have been feeling - day after day - looking for a child in a huge world and how her own world was barely moving as time passed. It was a good read - you could really feel for the characters as they developed throughout the story. Definitely a worth-while read!

One Love by Cedella Marley and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton is such a fun book - reminds me of the catchy tune that Cedella's father, Bob Marley, made famous!!

While I loved the the idea of adapting my father’s lyrics into children’s books, I did have some concerns. His songs are beloved by millions of people all over the world - would his fans accept a new version of a songs that means so much to them? But the more I thought about it, the more I knew that it was an idea my dad would have loved. He gave his music to the world and to his family. His song will always be his, and now my version can stand alongside and give a new generation of children a chance to experience One Love in a way that’s just for them.

I can understand fans’ concerns because I had to take the same leap of faith when I

gave my adapted lyrics to Vanessa Brantley-Newton to illustrate for One Love. She and I hadn’t worked together before – and hadn’t ever met. Would she understand my vision for the new lyrics? Would her pictures match those in my mind? Luckily she not only understood, but surpassed by vision. Her illustrations capture all the joy of the song and I especially love the diversity of the characters – every child will be able to see someone that looks like them or someone they know on the pages. And Vanessa incorporated so many wonderful touches, like the pictures of my father and the number “56” on the town house, which was the house number of my childhood home.

Allowing many hearts to contribute to a project isn’t always easy. We often hold onto what’s familiar and want to maintain control. But the message of One Love is “let’s get together.” So in away my father and I got together to create the lyrics, and Vanessa and I got together to create the book – and it does “feel alright.”

Reclaiming Lily

This is a book that really caught my attention - China adoption, older child adoption, finding birth family later in life - yep, Lacy had me from page one!! Reclaiming Lily by Patti Lacy is a book that captivates. It is authentic - even the whole adoption story - we can say from experience that it follows truth. But Lily's story was also moving for me - just a scenario of what adopted children might face as they get older (not much different than our biological children on some levels) - but those deep-seated thoughts of their birth families - it all just made for a wonderful novel for me. The story is tender - and not one that you figure out in 10 pages (my big beef with christian fiction)! It is the deeply moving story of Kai, trying to locate her biological sister, Lily, in the United States. Kai is not involved in the medical profession and feels it is her duty to find her sister and tell her of a life-threatening disease that their birth mother died from. It is the story of an adoptive family that must decide if this is good timing for their daughter - and then it is the story of Lily (Joy, as her adoptive family calls her) and all that she goes through in finding out more of her story. Truly a novel full of passion and authenticity.

I have been looking for a book like this for FOREVER (well, almost!!). John Dyer's From the Garden to the City is a look at "The Redeeming and Corrupting Power of Technology". I have been impressed and hooked from the very first page - this book is well-written and packed with Biblical background and researched information, but it is also humorous and timely. I consider myself a lover of all-things-techy and this book shed new insight into ways that I can think about all of this new technology and the role it plays or could play in my own life. Rebecca St. James has written What is He Thinking?? What Guys Want Us to Know About Dating, Love, and Marriage. This book is a great "manual" for female teens and those in their 20's and even 30's that are still single and want to know more about men and why they act the way they do in regards to dating and even marriage. I was impressed with this book - St. James has done her research - she has interviewed young men to ask them the tough questions so that girls can read the book and have a clearer understanding of the men they are in relationships (or may soon be in relationships) with. I think her variety of men she interviewed makes this an extremely useful tool - it is honest, wise, and insightful - all while being humorous! This was an enjoyable read and I know our girls out there dating or getting ready to date will enjoy it as well.

I was just introduced to Carlito C. Caterpillar's Math House Games - what a fun way to get our little ones introduced to math and mathematical concepts! I like the way the game is set up to build on early concepts like understanding quantity and then moving on to numeration, etc. This system seems very well thought out as well as being clear and easy to teach. The instructions are easy to follow and if you need extra help making your manipulatives - that is all available online on their site as well. Lifesong in Zambia

Lifesong is serving the people of Zambia... the orphaned, the at-risk, and the poor... by utilizing the land that is, like the people, so full of potential. Lifesong farms-Zambia reaped its first strawberry harvest in June, and local grocers have been purchasing the berries. With additional acres to farm, we are hoping to process some of the berries and begin marketing Lifesong Farms Strawberry Jam.

By harvesting fruit, we are able to serve more orphans by providing the gift of a job at Lifesong's gardens and self worth to an orphan's caregiver. In every season of life, the Enemy would whisper the lie that I would “never make it” to the next. I believed it. Time and time again, I thought his words held power. As a young child, I never thought I would live to see my school years. Once I entered school, I never thought I would live to see the next day, next grade, or milestone in life. I listened to a very real enemy, even though I didn’t want to. Even though I came from a strong, Christian family, I felt powerless to stop the lies. Fear gripped me, stole from me, and taunted every careful step I took.

I gave my heart to Christ at six years old, yet fear still held me tight. Though I had renewed hope, the whispers and lies continued to flow and drown out truth through every season. When, I heard the words that burned a hole straight through, I was nose-to-nose with what
appeared to be the sum of all my fears.

I was twenty-six weeks pregnant with triplets. In the beginning, I had been pregnant with quads, but had lost one child at 14 weeks. I never imagined we might all go meet Jesus on the same day. I mourned the thought of my husband walking through life alone. I grieved for the children that would either die, be disabled on this earth, or grow up motherless. And I burned with anger, not just because of the oxygen mask strapped to my face as I struggled for breath and life, but for twenty-five years of allowing Satan to tell me that I would never make it to tomorrow.

Tomorrow had come.

As nurses whirled around me, I prayed Acts 17:25 out loud, “…You give life and breath to everything, and satisfy every need.” I pleaded with the God I personally knew through a relationship with His Son, Jesus. I knew He had a plan for my life that was good according to Jeremiah 29:11. In my humanity, I struggled with the thought that death might be His plan for us on that day.

Today, we are parents to three healthy five-year-olds. You would never know they were born nine weeks premature. The joy that Satan has stolen from me in 30 years, through a spirit of fear, is great. I imagine if you strung each lying sentence end-to-end, they might wrap the globe. Yet, I have promised to tell others of God’s miracles in my life and do my part in setting captives free. Tomorrow had come, but so had Jesus, and it is He who has defeated the grave.

“For God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

The Violets of March

I can't even remember where I saw it - but I added The Violets of March by Sarah Jio to my reading list and got my turn from the library and read it in two days! Yep, it was THAT good. I found Jio to be a super writer - she kept me interested from the first page. There are actually two story lines in this novel - one that took place years before the main character, Emily, comes upon the diary, and then Emily's current day story line. It is Emily's mission - while healing her own heart, to try to untangle this mysterious diary that, she feels, may shed some light on her own situation. I would recommend this one - with hesitation to my teen readers because some of the scenes are more explicit than I would have my teen read - but would tell adult readers that the storyline was intriguing and worth reading! Love the tangled mystery of a good plot!

AND I'm kind of pumped about her next novel, The Bungalow, coming out in Dec. of 2011!

Sparky the Fire Dog

National Fire Prevention Week is October 9-15 this year and I have just the book to help you celebrate!! Sparky the Fire Dog by Don Hoffman is PERFECT to help teach our little ones some fire safety tips while enjoying a fun book! The illustrations are lively and fun - Todd Dakins mastered the feel for this story - the characters are friendly and the book has such a fun "water spot" technique that captures the fire/water theme - LOVED that!! Sparky the Fire Dog was a collaboration with the National Fire Prevention Association - and you know you can trust the content. I love how at the end of the book they go back over all of the tips they have taught you while you were reading - a great recap - and one kids will remember as each tip starts with the first letter of an animal name. This is a great book to add to your fire safety theme - and we are always looking for new books on this theme!!

Vineyard Worship artist and worship leader Jeremy Riddle has announced the release of his new studio album entitled, Furious. The album is set for release on September 20 via NewDay Distribution.

Riddle began production on the album nearly a year ago with Dove Award winning producer Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, David Crowder Band) at the helm. Cash’s contribution forms the backbone of the album which also features production from Bobby Hartry, a long time Riddle collaborator. The project follows Prepare The Way: Live, an album recorded in front of a live audience in Corpus Christi, Tex., earlier this year from Vineyard.

Riddle describes Furious saying, “It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe."

Four years on the road as a touring worship leader eventually took its toll on Jeremy, so in January 2011, the former jr. high youth pastor came on staff as worship community pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, Calif. Working under pastors Brian and Jenn Johnson, Jeremy facilitates a worship community of over 200 people within the church.

“My wife (Katie) and I have always had a heart to serve the local church and never wanted to do the full-time travel thing for very long, so it felt like a good time to transition into something different,” Jeremy says. “I’ve developed such an appreciation for the fruit that has been sowed from my life – personally and artistically – by being part of a local community.”

Consequently, several of the tracks on Furious are also featured on Be Lifted High, the most recent album from Bethel Church.

“These songs are a reflection of being part of something bigger than just me,” Jeremy says. “Through some significant growth in understanding and living out humility from a very independent place, I’ve shifted into a place where I can’t even claim this record is completely inspired by me. There are so many elements of the album that could never have flowed from me had I not been connected to people walking out life with me.”

I was sent a digital copy of Stanley Seagull by Tribute Books and thought this was a fun story. It is the story of seagull that gets separated from his friends when he doesn't realize danger is present. He has to find his way back to his buddies AND the ocean - which isn't easy! This book is also environmental at its core so if you are doing a unit on how humans affect the environment - this would be a good choice to help show those affects.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Cathy Mazur is the daughter of Gary and Catherine H. Errico. She was educated in the Dunmore public school system and graduated from Dunmore High School in 1971. She received a bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Mansfield State College in 1975. She received a Reading Specialist Certificate from the University of Scranton in 1978. Cathy was employed as an elementary school librarian for the Mid Valley School District from 1975 until her retirement in 2010. While at Mid Valley, she instituted and coordinated the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program for 33 years helping students to develop a love of reading outside the classroom. Cathy served on the Board of Directors for the Valley Community Library in Peckville, Pa. for over 20 years acting as president for one year and board secretary for 19 years. She presently serves on the library’s Developmental Committee chairing various fundraising events. She resides in Dickson City, Pa. with Frank, her husband of 31 years. They are the parents of two children, Gary, 27 and Gia, 19. Now in her retirement, she is focused on writing books for children like Stanley Seagull.

Colleen Gedrich's Bio:
Colleen Gedrich, a lifelong resident Throop, Pa., earned a BFA in illustration from Marywood University in 2002. She is a freelance illustrator specializing in animal-themed work. She enjoys creating her art using mostly watercolor and pastel. As a dedicated animal rights activist and full-time program coordinator for International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR), Colleen lives her dream of joining her passions for animals and art to promote a more harmonious world with a touch of beauty. I was sent a copy of the new DVD Series, Theo - Teaching Children God's World, and boy, am I impressed. As the Director of Children's Ministries at our church - I can see so many uses for this series. The clips are short enough to show as an intro to a lesson - and yet enticing enough to catch kids' attention and reach them with deep theological truths. The animation is wonderful - and I just love it that in the clips I saw, Theo always starts by singing a great hymn of the faith - those that can be so easily lost on our kids today. This is quality - and is something our kids will grasp hold of and be taught deep truths!

Once in awhile, I am asked to review a book that has "me" written all over it. And this one is IT! I am a font freak - no, I won't even tell you how many lovely fonts my computer has installed on it - that is my secret. (But I find new ones all the time and it doesn't stop me from adding more every now and then!!) So Just My Type by Simon Garfield really jumped out at me as one I just HAD to read! This book has everything you ever wanted to know about fonts - and I do mean everything! I had no idea the history behind some of these font types. It was intriguing to me - fonts that you see everyday - all around you - and you never stop to think what prompted their formation or why they look like they do.

But after you read this book - you WILL think about fonts all around you! I guarantee it!

Stained Glass Hearts

Patsy Clairmont is MARVELOUS!! She makes me laugh when I hear her speak - she makes me laugh when I read her work - but she can, on a dime, make me cry as well. She speaks to my heart and helps me to look inward and make some changes. Her latest book, Stained Glass Hearts is no exception. We are but broken glass - but when we are held up to the light, after being soldered together, we can be something wonderful! Her chapters are engaging - and what I love is after every chapter, Clairmont ties in famous websites, artwork, music, etc so you can go and see the artwork and experience it for yourself. It is a well-rounded experience and I just LOVE this book!

SO if there were an award for the most clever album title, Ginny Owens' new CD would definitely WIN!! Get In, I'm Driving - I just love this title!! Ginny is an amazing woman with an even-more-amazing voice. Her work is so versatile - just listen to the first song which is catchy and hip hop and then continue on and you will find a soothing song that is a completely different style altogether. I haven't tired yet of this album - it is wonderful and my girls LOVE it as well.

Brennan Manning and John Blase's Smack Dab in the Middle of God's Love is a unique and fun beginning look at God's love for your youngest ones. I love that it's set in a little Mexican village - I love that even our youngest ones will see how big God's love is for them - I love that the illustrations are so colorful and fun - yep, I could go on and on! Oh yes, and I LOVE "Smack Dab" - I used that phrase as a kid and I love that it's back!!

Through Willie Juan and Ana - you see God's amazing love for us as these two people lavish their love on little ones in their Mexican village.
